This is an appointment to the HSE Dublin & Midlands Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise for 24 hours per week and Tallaght University Hospital for 13 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

A Consultant Neurologist serving both Tallaght University Hospital and Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise mirroring the service provided to NGH, would have a significant and favourable impact on patient care in Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise, allowing early neurological assessment of in-patients and facilitating early transfer of patients with neurological disorders to Tallaght University Hospital, when appropriate. This additional Consultant Neurologist would provide an in-patient consult service to Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise, enable more rapid diagnosis and appropriate management of patients with neurological disorders, thereby facilitating more rapid discharge from hospital, improving ED waiting times, bed availability and flow through Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise.
The new appointee will participate within the current structure. Currently Tallaght University Hospital Neurologists provide a 1 in a 7 , “24/7/365” on call service for Acute General Neurology, as well as participating in a regional acute stroke/telemedicine rota shared with ARHC colleagues.
There will be scope for subspecialisation within an area of Neurology in keeping with the needs of the unit and skills of the individual. A new OPD service will be established in Midlands Hospital Portlaoise once clinic space and administration resources are provided.
The addition of a new permanent consultant will facilitate enhanced access to timely consultant-provided and consultant-led care to Dublin Midlands RHA patients requiring neurological assessment and management.
To attend at any clinic or site maintained by the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise / Tallaght University Hospital in the group catchment as appropriate and to provide either there or in the appropriate hospital such diagnostic, treatment or consultation service as may be appropriate.
To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant’s area of competence, as set out within the Service Plan/ in line with policies as specified by the Employer.
To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant’s care.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned to the appointed consultant by the Clinical Director at Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise / Tallaght University Hospital.
The Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise (MRHP) is a model 3 hospital providing acute-care hospital services including 24-hour Emergency Department service (ED), 24 hour Maternity Assessment Unit and a range of inpatient and outpatient General Medical, Surgical, Urology, Gastroenterology, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatric, Special Care Baby Unit, Critical Care Unit, Transitional Care unit (TCU) and Endoscopy services.
Trinity College Dublin is the formal academic partner for Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise.
It serves a population within the counties of Laois, Kildare, Carlow, Offaly and North Tipperary. MRHP is easily accessed as it is situated off the main national motor way.
Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching and learning hospitals, with adult, psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site. The Hospital has 450 inpatient adult beds, 74 onsite day beds for Dialysis, Oncology, Infusion, Haematology, Cardiology, Bone & Joint and minor surgery services. The Hospital also has a Day Surgery Centre located near the Hospital which has four theatres and 25 bays for elective surgery. There are an additional 61 offsite beds under its governance. The Hospital is staffed by over 3,500 people with 64 different nationalities represented on the team.
The Hospital is an exciting and dynamic place to work, in the midst of implementing a new hospital strategy, the team have already delivered on the opening of a new Renal Dialysis unit, Reeves Day Surgery Centre, a step down facility in the community, a new ICU and the development of a supraregional Endometriosis Service. The Tallaght University Department of Neurology currently has a staffing of 6.6WTE permanent consultants, with an additional 0.4WTE service to Naas General Hospital (NGH). TUH Neurology team coordinates outpatient (OPD) and inpatient services, and provides a Liaison Neurology service to other specialties on-site. In 2024 the Neurology service conducted 14,444 OPD and >1200 inpatient consultations, 976 day ward procedures, and discharged 287 inpatients.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
