VTRABR20 Consultant Radiologist s.i. Breast Radiology
This is an appointment to the National on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Breastcheck - Merrion Unit for 19 hours per week and St Vincent's University Hospital for 18 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
The purpose of the post is to support the continued delivery of a high quality breast radiology service to Merrion Breast Screening Unit and to the radiology department at SVUH.
The appointee to the post will work within BreastCheck Merrion Unit and St. Vincent’s University Hospital. Provision of services will be in accordance with the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive with an agreed schedule of commitment and practice plan.
Our workload continues to increase due to the BreastCheck Age Extension initiative and the expansion of the symptomatic service at SVUH, supported by new consultant appointments to deliver the breast surgery and radiology services. In addition to increased numbers, the nature of our work has changed in recent years due to advances in radiological techniques, the development of oncoplastic surgical techniques and major advances in medical oncology including administration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and the identification of new treatment targets. These advances are of great benefit to patients with breast cancer and have resulted in significantly improved disease free and overall survival. They have also led to increased case complexity which requires additional staffing to ensure the continued delivery of the high quality, patient-centred, service that defines our practice.
The organisational role carries service planning and resource management responsibilities at individual Consultant level, at hospital department level and at the National Screening Service level. The appointee will be required to play a full and constructive role in medical audit and will be expected to participate in continuing medical education (see below).

Early detection and treatment of sight-threatening retinopathy. When retinopathy is detected early, treatment is effective at reducing or preventing damage to one’s sight.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:
€238,221 €251,098 €264,691 €271,846 €278,998 €286,151
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
