Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist - Mental Health Service Limerick, LKCPCP08.
This is an appointment to the HSE Mid West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to MHS Limerick for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

The Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist Hub Consultant will be responsible for the following:
Provide individual support to young people and their parent/carer(s) with high-risk acute mental health needs/illness (step up) in collaboration with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service teams.
Provide a range of brief interventions for children, young people and family / carers.
Ensure that the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub actively engages in collaboration with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service teams to support all children and young people accepted onto the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub caseload.
Ensure that the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub actively promotes and engages children, young people, parents / carer(s) in all aspects of care and recovery planning.
Ensure that engagement and recovery principles are integrated into all aspects of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Hub delivery.
Promote that telehealth is used as a blended approach to provide timely support and care to the young person, parent / carer(s).
In the Mid-West the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service is a regional service which incorporates North Tipperary, Limerick City and County and County Clare. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service is a Consultant led community based service provided by 7 multi-disciplinary teams serving East, West and Central Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. The service is delivered on an Out-Patient basis.
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub development is part of a national pilot programme, HSE Mid West has been identified as one of the learning sites .This is an important step in the journey to provide a modern, responsive integrated and fit for purpose mental health Service for Children and young people in HSE Mid West Region in particular in response to the recent Mental Health Commission report on The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service services.
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Mental Health hub have been designed and developed to provide intensive brief mental health interventions to support Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service teams in delivering enhanced responses to children, young people and their families / carers in time of acute mental health crisis in the persons own environment / community facility and with the active involvement of the young person and their family/ carers/ supporters and interagency liaison with local partners. Support from these hubs is time limited and entails a range of evidence informed therapeutic approaches, including medication management, psychotherapeutic based individual, group and family interventions. Referral to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub can only be made by the community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service teams.
The community teams will retain clinical responsibility for the young person until they are accepted by the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub team and clinical responsibility will be transferred back to the community team once the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service hub intervention is complete.
The services provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for children and adolescents with mental health disorders.
The aims and objectives of the service are to provide an integrated, accessible and comprehensive community based mental service to the client group in the Mid-West.
The philosophy and approach of the service is to treat the young person presenting with a mental health difficulty as close to possible to their own community and within the context of their own family environment.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
