Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine - Wexford General Hospital & Integrated Health Area Waterford WexfordThis is an appointment to the HSE Dublin & South East Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Wexford General Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and IHA Waterford Wexford, for 18.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.Please see information booklet for further details
This is a new post funded as part of a national pilot project under the HSE Corporate Plan 2020-2023 and HSE National Service Plan and informed by the work and outputs of the diagnostic and post diagnostic projects led by the National Dementia Office between 2017-2019 and by an expert Advisory group and consultations with key stakeholders. It was developed by the National Dementia Office (HSE) in conjunction with the Centre for Economic and Social Research on Dementia in NUI Galway and the Dementia Services Information and Development Centre.
The Wexford Memory Assessment & Support Service was established in late 2022 in Enniscorthy, Wexford under the aegis of the National Dementia Office and clinical governance is currently provided by the Consultants in Geriatric Medicine at the local acute hospital Wexford General Hospital. The service aims to provide specialist diagnostic and post-diagnostic and brain health services to patients experiencing cognitive decline. The service is directly provided for within the 2023 National Model of Care for Dementia and has recently seen approval for a WTE Consultant to lead and govern the service. The service is primarily community-based in line with the principles of Slaintecare. There is shared corporate governance between HSE IHA Waterford Wexford Healthcare and Wexford General Hospital.
It is predicted that by 2046, 152,157 people will have dementia. Although mainly a disease of old age, approximately 4,000 people under the age of 65 live with dementia in Ireland. Ireland has one of the highest populations of people over the age of 75 and has the highest number of estimated people living with dementia as per 2018 figures. (Dementia Services in Ireland, 2018, National Dementia Office - NDO) is unique with the joint- highest proportions of older adults >65 years in Ireland. 16.9% of our population are over 65 with 27.9% of those living alone.Please see information booklet for further details

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
