Mayo University Hospital for 25 hours per week and HSE West & North West Region for 12 hours per week
This is an appointment to the HSE West and North West on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Mayo University Hospital for 25 hours per week and HSE West & North West Region for 12 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganization of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes. This is a new post.Please note: The Letter of Approval for this position contains a reference to the Consultants Contract 2008 and Contract Type. With the implementation of the Public Only Consultant Contract 2023 (POCC23) on the 8th March 2023, all candidates should be aware that the only contract to be offered for this position is POCC23.
* As outlined in HR Memo – Haddington Road Agreement (HRA) hours reversal on 29th June 2022, there is a 2 hour reduction for Consultants that are on 39 hours per week (to 37 hours per week)

To take a lead role as part of a multidisciplinary team in the provision of specialist medicine for the elderly care to patients in a variety of settings to include acute hospital setting, rehabilitation, etc.
To co-ordinate the pathway of care for vulnerable older people, identified for case management, across all service interfaces. This will involve managing a varied caseload from the allocated locality.
To refer the client on to other services as required / consented to and effectively communicate any decisions made, to all appropriate agencies and negotiate where appropriate.
To attend at Mayo University Hospital at such times as may be determined by the HSE, and in emergencies as required, and to remain in attendance thereat as long as their services are required.
On call duties: Be part of the existing Speciality of Medicine on-call rota at Mayo University Hospital
Duties are shared between four Geriatricians in Mayo University Hospital (MUH) serving a total population of 137,940 2022 census which had grown by 6% on the previous census. The number of people aged 65 and over continue to grow. This age group has increase by 19% to 27,328 in Mayo and by 22% to 776,315 at a national level since 2016. On the MUH site Geriatricians work with 16 other physicians to provide integrated services for acute general internal medicine/ geriatric medicine. Acute Stroke Care Unit is provided in the MUH site since July 2008. Furthermore, consultation service is given to all departments on the acute site. Liaison service is provided to the orthopaedic department. At Sacred Heart Hospital inpatient rehabilitation / respite service is given on a 36 bedded ward. Long term care assessment is performed through participation in Placement Forum committee. Consultation service is given to all district hospitals. Weekly outpatients onsite occur for three consultants. There is an expectation of the post holder to participate on the acute on call rota on a pro rata. Geriatricians are expected to work with the National Clinical Programme for older persons (NCPOP) initiative to develop an acute integrated Day Hospital at the Primary Care Centre in Moneen.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
