This is an appointment to HSE Dublin & Midlands Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore for 20.5 hours per week, Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar for 6.5 hours, Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, for 6.5 hours and St James's Hospital for 3.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

The person chosen will provide services as a Consultant Haematologist (Clinical & Laboratory) for the population served by Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore, Midland Regional Hospital at Portlaoise and Midland Regional Hospital at Mullingar.
To work with the existing Consultants and all departments involved to provide a comprehensive Medical Service to the patient population served by Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore.
Commitment to 2 Clinics per month to Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar & Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise participating in quality management and overseeing blood transfusion and haematology laboratories closely working with the Haemovigilance Officer in both sites.
Maintain the development of malignant haematology service and benign haematology.
Continue to support all three laboratories – Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore, Midlands and Portlaoise.
Continue high level of diagnostic service to the region, reporting bone aspiration and trephine biopsies.
Continue to engage with Quality Management System.
Training and mentoring of SPR, Registrars and SHO’s.
Provide leadership - Clinical Lead for NCCP.
Multi-disciplinary meeting with St. James’s Hospital weekly

The Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise is a model 3 hospital providing acute-care hospital services. Trinity College Dublin is the formal academic partner for Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise. It serves a population within the counties of Laois, Kildare, Carlow, Offaly and North Tipperary. Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise is easily accessed as it is situated off the main national motor way.
St. James’s Hospital is Ireland’s largest acute academic teaching hospital and is based in Dublin’s south inner city. The fundamental purpose is the delivery of health treatment, care and diagnosis as well as health promotion and preventative services at local, regional and national levels.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
