Professor / Consultant Cardiologist - Cork University Hospital 18.5hpw & University College Cork 18.5hpw, MECA5752.
This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and University College, Cork for 18.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

The post-holder will hold senior academic office in the University and will be expected to lead and progress important academic strategy for cardiology, especially focused on preventive cardiology in collaborative networks locally, nationally and internationally. Comprehensive educational programmes for future doctors and other health care professionals, in recognition of the broadening base for delivery of care including preventive strategy, and highest quality research and innovative strategies to underpin this care will form the basis of this academic post.
The role of the Professor is to support, maintain and enhance the University's national and international reputation for excellence in research and teaching.
Contribution to excellence in research will encompass international leadership in a Professor's relevant subject area through originality in research and scholarship and contribution to the advancement of knowledge in that subject area.
Professors are expected to lead research within the University, both in their own research work and in their support of the research work of other staff.
Demonstrate academic leadership in the development of Medicine – Preventive Cardiology through teaching, research and scholarship, and in any other appropriate manner.
Promote the discipline both inside and outside the University and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University and society.
The Cardiology Departments in Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital and Mallow General Hospital provide hospital based inpatient and outpatient secondary and tertiary Cardiology care to a population of 584,156 (Cork County) to 1,373,346 (Munster Region).
The Cardiology service at Cork University Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient care, non-invasive diagnostics, interventional cardiology (coronary stenting, percutaneous aortic valve replacement and ASD closure), invasive cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac rehabilitation.
There is no dedicated Preventive Cardiology consultant, team or service. More specifically there are no hypertension or lipid clinics. The post-holder will give academic leadership and vision for preventive cardiology, aligned with the objectives of Slaintecare.
The appointee will be a senior academic leader in the University College Cork School of Medicine, based in the Department of Medicine.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:

The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum
