PBOGOG06 Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe for 18 hours per week and University Hospital Galway for 19 hours.
This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe for 18 hours per week and University Hospital Galway for 19 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
There is an over-arching Clinical Governance Structure in place within the HSE West and North West Region which has a Women’s and Children’s Network. With the regional development of Networks of Care the structure of the Women’s and Children’s Network will evolve over time. The Women’s and Children’s Network includes the Maternity Units in the following hospitals: Galway as the tertiary referral hospital, Portiuncula, Sligo, Mayo and Letterkenny as secondary level units.
This additional post will provide better outpatient care, improved labour ward cover and better access for non-cancer gynaecology patients. The current Consultants at Portiuncula, whilst appointed as General Obstetricians/Gynaecologists, have developed sub-speciality interests in uro-gynaecology and fetal maternal medicine. The post will support the National Clinical Care Programme for Obstetrics and Ambulatory Gynaecology. It will also facilitate the hospital meeting the training requirements for undergraduate and post graduate education.

HSE West and North West is responsible for the provision of all acute and community services across the 6 counties of Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal and is operationally divided into 4 Integrated Health Areas (IHAs) – Galway/Roscommon IHA, Mayo IHA, Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan/South Donegal IHA and Donegal IHA, each managed by an Integrated Health Area (IHA) Manager.
To support the delivery of high quality, consistent care, Networks of Care are being developed across the region which are multidisciplinary clinically led regional structures, which will provide leadership, set the strategy for the relevant clinical/care area, support quality, risk and safety structures/processes, and help support the regional leadership team in the assurance processes related to the relevant services.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
