PAED5847 Senior Lecturer / Consultant General Paediatrician - Cork University & University College Cork
This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 22 hours per week and University College, Cork for 15 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
patients presenting with the full spectrum of allergy related paediatric illnessesLeading on the development of a supra-regional service in paediatric allergy and immunology providing outpatient and inpatient care. Supporting the multi-disciplinary allergy team in the delivery of this service.
Contributing to the general paediatric service through a weekly general paediatric teaching clinic providing teaching to undergraduate students within the School of Medicine, UCC.
Contributing to the acute unscheduled care of children presenting to the service through contributing to a consultant of the week system and on call after hours service for general paediatrics.
Leading on the development and delivery of curriculum in the fields of paediatrics and paediatric allergy to undergraduate and postgraduate students within the School of Medicine, UCC. Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research. Leading original clinical research, obtaining external funding for clinical research and building a research team focused on the research interests of the postholder.

Cork University Hospital (CUH) is the major teaching hospital in the HSE South with a complement of 815 beds. The hospital is the only Level 1 trauma centre in the Republic of Ireland – a status conferred as a consequence of the wide range of on-site Paediatric, medical and surgical specialties including Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardio Thoracic Surgery and Plastic Surgery along with acute medical, surgical and adult psychiatry and adult neurology services.
The hospital has a state-of-the-art Emergency Department which is designated as the National Maritime Advice Centre. Cork University Hospital is the principal teaching hospital attached to the School of Medicine, University College Cork. The UCC Dental School, which is one of the two undergraduate dental schools in the Republic of Ireland, is located on the hospital site. The hospital is designated by the Health Research Board as a Clinical Trials Centre. The INFANT Discovery Centre is part of Cork’s Clinical Research Centre, and is located on the CUH campus, providing Ireland’s only dedicated, exclusive facilities for children participating in research studies at UCC.
CUH has a long tradition as a centre for nurse training. In addition, there are now new training programmes in Occupational Therapy, Speech &Language Therapy and Pharmacy in association with University College Cork. CUH is Ireland’s largest regional Paediatric unit, currently tri-located with maternity and adult services. The Division of Children’s Services is a part of the Governance Structure of the Cork University Hospital Group and is currently commencing a new build single unit on site at CUH, with single room inpatient beds, day care and ambulatory and therapy facilities for the exclusive use of children The new unit will have 68 inpatient beds, 6 HDU beds and 10 day beds. Building work on this new unit will commence in 2026.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st August 2025:
€233,527 €246,150 €259,475 €266,489 €273,501 €280,513
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
