Job summary

The Cancer Service for the HSE West and North West region delivers an integrated programme of complex, high volume multidisciplinary care to cancer patients across the region. This service is delivered over five hospital sites: Galway University Hospital (GUH) comprising University Hospital Galway (UHG) and Merlin Park University Hospital (MPUH), Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH), Mayo University Hospital (MUH), Sligo University Hospital (SUH) and Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH).

As part of the Integrated Governance Programme for HSE West and North West, a Managed Clinical &Academic Network (MCAN) was established in 2020, to deliver a transformative model of innovative Cancer Care. This will align clinical, academic and executive governance for Cancer Services across the HSE West and North West in line with the National Cancer Strategy 2017 – 2026.

Galway University Hospital acts as the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP)- designated tertiary referral cancer centre for the other sites within the HSE West and North West region, with the University of Galway as its academic partner.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Consultant Medical Oncologist with a special interest in Cancer Genetics, the appointee will be required to:

To deliver a transformative model of innovative Cancer Care that will align clinical, academic and executive governance for Cancer Services across the HSE West and North West in line with the National Cancer Strategy 2017 – 2026.

To lead the development and delivery (0.5 WTE) of a new Cancer Genetics Service for the HSE West and North West Region including the establishment of a multidisciplinary team including Genetic Counsellors, Genomic Resource Associate and specialist nursing staff over time as resources become available.

To participate in the provision and administration (0.5 WTE) of medical oncology services (diagnostics, staging, treatment planning and treatment delivery via inpatient and outpatient pathways, consult service, clinical follow up, etc) for patients in Galway University Hospital (GUH).

Information about the organisation

This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Galway for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026:

€235,862     €248,612      €262,070     €269,154     €276,236     €283,318


The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.

The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
