Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) has 186 inpatient beds and 24-day beds, its aim to deliver high quality and equitable care for all its patients, in a safe and secure environment, and to achieve excellence in clinical practice, teaching, training and research. PUH provides a comprehensive range of services to patients in the emergency, inpatient and outpatient setting. PUH operates as a model 3 hospital within the West North West Region. PUH provides acute and elective Paediatric, obstetric, medical and surgical/Anaesthetic services. The hospital also has a 24/7 Emergency Department with over 32,541 attendances per annum. The Paediatric Unit at Portiuncula comprises of 23 Paediatric beds. The special care baby unit has 8 cots in total with 2 of these being intensive care. In 2024, there were 8,192 Paediatric unscheduled care visits to the Emergency Department, and 2,939 Paediatric admissions.

The key clinical responsibility of this post is to provide a high standard clinical service in Paediatrics at consultant level, across the site in PUH and Community in compliance with best practice clinical guidelines and the National Clinical Programme for Paediatrics & Neonatology.
Demonstrate ability on how to provide a Paediatric service and the ability to liaise with service providers on a local and regional basis.
Demonstrate a high level of verbal and non-verbal communication skills in order to effectively communicate with Patients/Parents, colleagues, hospital management, other hospital staff , GP`s and stakeholder from other institutions.
Demonstrate effective communication skills including: the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner; the ability to facilitate and manage groups through the learning and teaching process; the ability to give constructive feedback to encourage learning.
Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect.
Consultant Paediaitrician s.i. Paediatric Neurodisability - Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and Galway, Roscommon IHA, HSE West and North West RegionThis is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe for 18.50 hours per week and Galway, Roscommon IHA, HSE West and North West Region for 18.50 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
