Consultant Physician In Geriatric Medicine (2 posts) Letterkenny University Hospital for 37 hours per week.
This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to at Letterkenny University Hospital for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganization of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
The post holder working as part of the wider team with their Consultants colleagues will grow and strengthen the Geriatric Service within the Medical Department at Letterkenny University Hospital.
Both appointees will contribute to the General Internal Medicine services, whilst specialising in their chosen field of Geriatrics.

Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) is part of the former Saolta University Healthcare Group and is the second-largest Model 3 hospital in the HSE network serving a population of over 160,000 people in the catchment area of County Donegal, in the Northwest of Ireland. The hospital has seen substantial growth in the last number of years and in 2023 there were over 47,000 ED attendances and over 25,000 hospital admissions.
On site specialities, include General Internal Medicine and its sub-specialities, General Surgery, Urology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, 24 hour Emergency Medicine Department Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Diagnostic Services and Anaesthetics incorporating ICU.
A newly commissioned Radiology Department was opened in 2021 and there are 2 CT Scanners and 1 new MRI Scanner on site. Out of hours CT scans are reported out of hours by Teleradiology Services.
The Department of General Medicine at Letterkenny University Hospital is staffed by skilled clinicians across all of the major specialties including Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Acute Medicine and Geriatric Medicine. The newly opened Medical Block, which hosts the Medical Department, comprises of an Acute Medical Assessment Unit, an Acute Stroke Unit and dedicated medical in-patient wards. There is also a 19-beded Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit on campus, which is under the governance of the Geriatric Service.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026:
€235,862 €248,612 €262,070 €269,154 €276,236 €283,318
Incremental credit is awarded in respect of previous experience at Consultant level.
