Job summary

Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist MHS Dublin North City for 37 hours per week

This is an appointment to the HSE Dublin & North East Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to MHS Dublin North City for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will lead a multidisciplinary adult ADHD team and will work with colleagues, the clinical director and executive clinical director to deliver timely, compassionate and effective care to adults with moderate to severe ADHD

• Leadership of the multidisciplinary team to implement the model of care and improve service delivery for adults with moderate to severe ADHD
• Triage of referrals according to agreed criteria
• Diagnosis and treatment of adults with moderate to severe ADHD with significant functional impairment in two or more domains
• Collaborative work with colleagues to ensure a supportive and learning work environment for each other and those in training
• Responsive work and excellent communication with GP and consultant psychiatrist colleagues
• Participation in the on-call rota
• Discharge of the duties of the responsible consultant psychiatrist, as defined in the Mental Health Act, 2001 and compliance with the rules, codes of practice and regulations of the Mental Health Commission when on call
• Participation in the psychiatry academic programme of the Mater Hospital

Information about the organisation

The National Clinical Programme for Adult ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) has been designed to:

• provide for the assessment of adults with symptoms suggestive of ADHD by trained and skilled staff
• provide multi-modal treatment involving a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions
• ensure that young people attending child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) for ADHD who continue to have significant symptoms of ADHD and/or co-morbid mental illness who require treatment can be transferred to adult mental health services and that this transfer can occur in a smooth and planned way
• deliver the above through a clearly defined and integrated clinical pathway

In the Integrated Health Areas (IHAs) of Dublin North County and Dublin North City and West, current provision to adults with ADHD is limited to those who have a co-existing mental illness. Due to the lack of capacity, referrals are not being accepted for assessment of adults who may have ADHD.

Adults with ADHD not recognised in childhood and 18 year olds diagnosed with ADHD in childhood with features persisting into adulthood will now have access to a public multidisciplinary adult ADHD service which will assess and treat symptomatic ADHD that is causing significant functional impairment.

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st February 2026

The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.

The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum
